On a working port, every minute a berth lane is out of action costs someone money. Straddle carriers, trucks and forklifts run on tight schedules, ships are waiting to be loaded and unloaded, and a single oil spill on the hardstand can bring a section of the terminal to a standstill. That’s exactly the situation our team was called in to handle at one of Sydney’s busiest ports — and the before and after photos tell the story.
The problem: a spill in a high-traffic lane
The spill sat right in the middle of an active operating lane, spread across several marked bays and stained deep into the grooved concrete. Oil on a port surface is more than an eyesore:
- Safety risk – oil on concrete is slippery for people on foot and reduces traction for heavy machinery carrying containers.
- Environmental risk – a trench drain runs right alongside the spill area. With the next rain or wash-down, untreated oil can be carried straight into stormwater and out into the harbour.
- Operational cost – while the area is contaminated, lanes are coned off, traffic is re-routed and the terminal loses throughput.
The goal was clear: clean it fast, clean it properly, and make sure nothing went down the drain.
The response: Hydra-Wash on site
Our Hydra-Wash truck is built for exactly this kind of job. It gives our operators the water, pressure and recovery capability needed to lift oil out of textured concrete, while capturing the wastewater so it doesn’t end up in the stormwater system.
On site, the process looked like this:
- Assess and isolate – working with the terminal team to secure the area around live machinery and protect the nearby drain.
- Treat the contamination – applying treatment to break down the oil in the concrete’s grooves and surface pores.
- Pressure clean – using the Hydra-Wash truck to wash the affected bays and lift the oil out of the surface.
- Recover the wastewater – capturing the runoff so contaminated water is collected rather than washed into the harbour.
- Hand the lane back – a final inspection, then the area is returned to the terminal so operations can resume.
The result
The after photo speaks for itself. The dark oil staining is gone, the concrete surface is clean and even, and the line markings are visible again. Most importantly, the lane went back into service with the spill dealt with properly — not just hosed away somewhere else.
Why fast, compliant spill response matters
For port operators, logistics yards and industrial sites, spills aren’t a matter of if but when. What matters is how quickly and how responsibly they’re handled. A contractor with the right equipment and experience can:
- reduce downtime and get lanes operational again sooner
- lower the risk of slips and machinery incidents
- help protect waterways and support environmental compliance
- leave surfaces clean rather than just “less dirty”
